Rent A Generator

Generator Rentals Information

There are many types of generators that can be rented. The basic categories they fall under are professional use for job sites, recreational use – camping trips for instance or even outdoor parties, and emergency use. Individual home owners usually rent a generator for emergency use because of a power outage. The types of generators that are rentable include: portable generators, home generators, electric generators, gas generator, standby generator, industrial generators, motor generator, propane generator, electrical generator, & emergency generators.

The biggest reason for renting a generator is that it acts as a temporary power supply for any of the reasons above. So to go about renting one, first you would identify what is the purpose for the generator. Next, you would tell the person you’re renting the generator from the square footage you need to power as well as any other energy using sources such as a home with an air conditioner. This is if you don’t already know the power it will take. Generators are rented by power – 10kw or less, 10kw to 100kw, and so on. Usually, to power a home for instance, would take 10000+ watts of energy.

Keep in mind the type of fuel you will need for your generator. The most common type of fuel used in them is gas but check to be certain. The person you ar dealing with can help you rent the proper generator by you suppyling the use and square footage information if you don’t know exactly what your power needs are. This will be in the form of a quote that you have requested by phone, in person, or email. They can be rented in any size from the smallest to industrial strength.

Generators are heavy equipment so you will need a truck in most cases to transport it home. Some services also offer delivery. For instance, a variety of hardward and tool stores offer delivery and a different types of generators to rent from their tool catalog. These generators can be rented hourly, daily, weekly, & monthly – prices vary depending on type, length of rental, and if delivery is requested.

Keep in mind when renting a generator that they are usually pretty noisy. So if you do not already know which type you are looking for, ask the the person you are dealing with and tell them if you need a quiet one as these are available. Honda’s tend to be the quietest currently available.

Rent a generator locally

Your options to rent a generator will be greatly influenced by your location and if there are dedicated rental services nearby you. So if these are not available, look for a large chain store nearby like Home Depot and Lowe’s. Many rental generator providers will provide delivery also.

Portable Generator Rental

For a portable generator rental, this can entail many different generators- usually anything up to 10kw in power supply. Many people think of these in terms of size, as in portability – the eas of moving them around to whatever location you are using them in.

So there are a few of things to consider when renting a portable generator.

Power Needs with your Portable

If you don’t know or know how to figure your power needs, whichever provider you pick can help you with that.  You can also go out to the Consumer Reports Power Calculator to attempt to figure out your wattage. The usual range though of portable generators available to rent are in the 1,000-10k range.

Pricing

And it can get a bit pricey, especially considering the cost of buying a generator outright. The cost ranges are:

per day: $50-$100+

weekly: $100-$300+

The other thing to consider is in what context do you need the generator. Is it a one time deal due to an emergency? Is it being used for a special event? Or do you need one on occasion, like for camping or certain work projects like running power tools in certain locations where you can’t get to electricity.

The latter case is when you might consider just buying a portable generator instead of renting. Because the rental costs, as you can see by the prices,  add up pretty quickly.

Providers

There are providers online or off. The best ones offline are in your own location. Just look up hardware stores in your area and give them a call as to availability. Keep in mind that the type of portable generators you can rent will vary by location and provider. For instance, if you check out the Home Depot site online, they offer tools for rent including generators. But the only one available on there right now is a 3000 watt. And they give no other details as far as pricing or anything so you would end up calling them anyways. Lowes has even less information online.

One other thing to keep in mind when renting a portable generator for your electric needs is the noise. Many generators are very noisy machines and are not suitable say in a campsite (unless you want people complaining amongst other problems) or for fishing/boats, or picnis. You also don’t want that racket too close to your home either. Your provider should be able to arrange the right one for you, just be sure to tell them clearly that you want a quiet one. All of them come with noise levels as part of their specs.
